Hey there! 🐝🎵

I’m Tabiina, ready to lead you on a fun-filled exploration of Kumamoto! 🙋‍♀️

Today, I’ve got a mix of must-sees for both visitors and locals alike.

Prepare to be delighted by Kumamoto’s culinary treats and sweet surprises, cozy cafes that take you back in time, and streets that echo the Showa era – a nostalgic period in Japan from the mid-20th century, blending tradition and modernity.

These aren’t your run-of-the-mill tourist spots. They’re the special, lesser-known parts of Kumamoto that offer a truly local experience. So, let’s jump in and make the most of Kumamoto’s hidden gems! 🌸🍰🚶‍♀️

1. Nagasaki Jiro Cafe – Nostalgia and Relaxation

Kumamoto’s indispensable mode of transport for both locals and visitors alike is the “Kumamoto City Tram.” With its mix of modern and classic designs, these trams are a beloved sight, weaving through the city and cherished by people of all ages.

Imagine sipping your coffee while watching these iconic trams glide by. Let me introduce you to such a unique spot, the “Nagasaki Jiro Coffee Room.”

Nestled on the second floor of the “Nagasaki Jiro Bookstore,” a national registered tangible cultural property since 1924, this coffee shop is a step back in time. Just a short walk from the Kumamoto City Tram B line’s “Shinmachi” stop, you’ll find this gem.

Originally an office and living space, the owners transformed it into a café with the hopes making use of a historical building with a great view to the community. The charming couple running the place adds to its warm, inviting atmosphere.

What awaits you inside is a nostalgic journey through taste. The café boasts meticulously crafted coffees, homemade sweets, and classic Japanese western-style dishes like curry rice and “Naporitan” spaghetti. For the average Japanese person these are truly comforting, old-fashioned flavors.

They also occasionally host live musical performances and movie events, so keep an eye on their social media for updates! 🐝🎵

2. Cafe Nanaseki – Soft Serve & Fruit Parfaits Crafted with Care

Early Season Strawberries ‘Hinoshizuku’ Parfait (¥1,080~) and Soft Serve Ice Cream – ¥400 (all prices include tax)

“Nanaseki,” a charming cafe named for its seven-seat setting, offers a journey into the world of exquisite soft serve ice creams and fruit parfaits.

The cafe’s name, literally translating to ‘seven seats’ in Japanese, reflects its intimate and exclusive ambiance. Here, the owner, Mr. Ogata, fueled by his love for soft serve, sought to craft the perfect recipe. His quest led him across Japan, culminating in the use of rich and creamy milk from Iwate Prefecture’s ‘Iwaizumi Dairy Farm”

But the real showstopper is the ‘Seasonal Fruit Parfait,’ a visually stunning and delicious combination of their signature soft serve with top-tier fruits. The menu rotates through 8-10 types of parfaits year-round, featuring ingredients like peaches, Shine Muscat grapes, mangoes, chestnuts, strawberries, and pears.

(A tidbit of charm: Despite its popularity, with 150-200 cups served daily, all are prepared by Mr. Ogata himself in this snug seven-seater cafe…!!)

Open in the evenings, Nanaseki is an ideal spot for a post-dinner dessert or a sweet finish to your night out.

3. Reef Burger – Kumamoto the “Hamburger” City of Japan??

It might come as a surprise to most, but Kumamoto City holds the title for the highest household spending on hamburgers in Japan. According to a 2022 household survey by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Kumamoto City ranks first in per-capita spending on burgers, even outdoing cities like Hiroshima and Chiba.

(Now that you mention it, there are indeed quite a few tasty burger joints around…)

In this burger-loving city, one place stands out: “Reef Burger.” Since its establishment in 2011, it’s garnered a huge fanbase for its dynamic visuals and commitment to deliciousness. In fact, many who’ve fallen for its flavors have come to train here and later opened their own burger joints in and outside Kumamoto, from Arao City to Fukuoka Prefecture.

Despite being a bit off the beaten path, “Reef Burger” continuously draws in customers and aspiring burger chefs.

BBQ Bacon, Egg and Cheese Burger with French Fries (Single Patty) – 1,595 yen

Their most popular menu item, once a limited-time special and now a regular feature due to its immense popularity, is the ‘BBQ Bacon! Egg! Cheese! Burger.’ This burger boasts a special spiced patty and a unique, slightly Japanese-style BBQ sauce made with four types of fruit.

The photo might be overloaded with cheese (thankfully! 💖), but inside the bun, you’ll find the patty, homemade bacon, lettuce, mayonnaise sauce, and egg.

It’s a feast for the eyes and the stomach, offering an impressive volume without compromising on the individual flavors of each ingredient.

Don’t miss out on experiencing the most popular burger in Kumamoto City, the top spender on hamburgers in Japan. It’s definitely worth a taste!

4. Izakaya Kan – Kumamoto is all about the Age Tonsoku (Fried Pig Feet)

“You’ll wake up with plump, glowing skin the next day! 💖

That’s a common way to praise pigs’ feet or tonsoku in Japanese, an izakaya favorite typically prepared grilled (yaki tonsoku) or stewed (tonsoku-ni).

But here’s a twist: in Kumamoto, it’s all about ‘Fried Pigs’ Feet’ (age tonsoku)!

Though the reasons why the fried version are popular here are unclear, fried pigs’ feet have become an iconic dish in Kumamoto’s izakaya.

This time, I’m introducing you to this beloved izakaya classic, which you can enjoy along with other local specialties like Basashi (horse sashimi) at a popular pub in Kumamoto – Izakaya Kan!

Crispy on the outside, melt-in-your-mouth inside ‘Age Tonsoku’ – ¥480 (tax included)

Located in the bustling central shopping district of Kumamoto City, “Izakaya Kan” is a popular spot known for its unique offerings.

Aside from Kumamoto specialties like Basashi and local dishes, their chef hails from Hunan Province in China and as such their Chinese dishes are also top-level, so their Taipien (太平燕 – a local Kumamoto-only Chinese-style dish) is a must-try!

This time, we’re spotlighting their Age Tonsoku (fried pig foot).

Prepared with traditional Chinese culinary techniques to remove any gaminess, the pigs’ feet are first par-boiled, seasoned with spices, and then deep-fried.

The result? A perfectly crispy skin and a tender, almost fall-off-the-bone interior.

Savor these hot pigs’ feet doused in homemade vinegared soy sauce for an explosion of flavors.

Absolutely delicious. You’ll be asking for seconds.

“Izakaya Kan” not only offers great food but also a welcoming atmosphere, making it an easy stop even for solo visitors.

Also, with over 200 varieties of shochu from all over Kyushu, it’s the perfect place to find a shochu to go together with your Kumamoto izakaya experience.

Their age tonsoku are available for takeout too! 🐝

5. Yakoboku – A Bar for Unique Kyushu-Inspired Cocktails in Kumamoto

(Left) Award-winning bartender Shinya Koba (Right) Signature Cocktail ‘Yakoboku’ – ¥1,600

Kaminoura-dōri, a hot spot for noteworthy eateries, is home to “Yakoboku,” a bar that stands out for its cocktails crafted from local fruits, herbs, and shochu from Kumamoto and across Kyushu.

A must-try at Yakoboku is their namesake cocktail, ‘Yakoboku.’ This drink encapsulates the essence of night-blooming jasmine, known as ‘Yakoboku’ in Japanese, which uniquely blooms in the evening. The cocktail is delicately enhanced with a Taiwanese spice, Maqaw. This peppercorn-like seed comes from the evergreen shrub Litsea cubeba, indigenous to Taiwan and often referred to as mountain pepper.

Yakoboku’s reputation soared in the summer of 2023 when it became the first Kyushu entrant in ‘Asia’s 50 Best Bars,’ drawing international attention.

Despite such accolades, Yakoboku aims to be accessible, especially to Japan’s youth, by clearly displaying prices on their menu.

With its early opening time at 6:00 PM, Yakoboku is ideal for a pre-dinner aperitif, perfectly setting the mood for the evening ahead.

The second floor is home to sister restaurant ‘Rurian’ which servces dishes using Kyushu-sourced ingredients and clay pot rice.

6. Retro Showa Vibe Meets Chic Modernity at Kawaramachi Textile Wholesalers Street

Kumamoto City harbors a not-so-famous yet absolutely visit-worthy gem, especially for those who fancy a nostalgic journey back in time. It’s the ‘Kawaramachi Textile Wholesalers Street’ (河原町繊維問屋街), a space that feels like a charming time warp into the Showa era.

Originally built in the 1950s post-war period as a textile district, this area has since undergone a remarkable transformation. Starting around 2010, it began to regain attention and has now evolved into a bustling hub. Here, you’ll find an eclectic mix of businesses lining the streets – from eateries and bento shops to long-established wagashi (traditional Japanese confectionery) stores, vintage clothing boutiques, artist studios, nail salons, retro accessory shops, art galleries, and architectural firms.

Located in the Kawaramachi area, midway between the city center and Kumamoto Station, it’s conveniently accessible, just steps away from the ‘Kawaramachi’ tram stop. This makes it an easy addition to any sightseeing itinerary.

We are spotlighting two notable spots on this street: “Outotsu Tacos,” known for their inventive tacos, and “SWEETS DE TAITO,” famed for their scrumptious scones.

Outotsu Tacos: A Fresh Take on Tacos in Kumamoto

Classic menu ‘Mexicana Tacos’ for ¥400 (top right) and limited-time Japanese-style ‘Shirasu and Shiso Leaf Tacos’ for ¥500 (bottom right)

Just opened in September 2023, “Outotsu Tacos” brings a unique taco bar style to Kumamoto.

The Tokyo-born owner, Mr. Yaemori, chose to relocate and open his shop in Kumamoto, drawn by the distinctive ambiance and warm, family-like atmosphere of the Kawaramachi Textile Wholesalers Street.

At “Outotsu Tacos,” the first standout feature is the taco shell. A blend of corn and locally sourced Kyushu flour creates a delightful ‘mochi-mochi’ (chewy) texture.

Every week, they surprise customers with inventive taco fillings, blending Japanese and Chinese flavors into their creations.

More than just tacos, this bar also offers a variety of snacks, international drinks, and Japanese sake, quickly becoming a hot spot in the area.

SWEETS DE TAITO: A Haven of Savory & Sweet Scones Made with Kumamoto Wheat

“SWEETS DE TAITO” isn’t just a bakery; it’s a dedication to the art of scone making, offering over ten varieties daily, all made with premium Kumamoto wheat.

The owner, initially not a big fan of scones, embarked on a quest to bake the perfect scone: one that’s neither too dry nor too sweet, but just right for daily indulgence. This quest led to a creation he’s truly proud of.

Since October 2023, their new additions, bagels and bagel sandwiches, have been receiving rave reviews.

On Friday to Sunday evenings, they also offer sundaes featuring seasonal fruits and coffee jelly.

When asked about choosing this location, owner Mr. Uramoto shared, “I’ve always loved the atmosphere and the streets here. However, some locals say that the area can be a bit unapproachable or intimidating, so I hoped my shop would make it easier for people to drop by.”

Indeed, the shop’s stylish interior is often filled with patrons, reflects Mr. Uramoto’s vision coming to life. 🐝💖

Head to “SWEETS DE TAITO” for delightful treats that are perfect for a little self-indulgence or as thoughtful gifts.
