Hey there, curry aficionados! Ready for a flavor expedition?
I’m the party leader of the Kumamoto Curry Party, sailing under the banner “Curry isn’t just food, it’s an adventure!” #CurryVoyage
This episode brings us to an exceptionally authentic haunt.
It all started with a “curry party” while in Kumamoto as an exchange student…
Today, I will be sharing about “Ruvani Sri Lanka Restaurant ” unveiled on January 15, 2015, nestled in the heart of Chuo Ward, Kamibayashi, Kumamoto City.
Perched on the second floor, the spot boasts roughly 20 cozy seats.
With counter and table seats accounted for, the restaurant has a capacity of about 20.
Meet the dynamic duo: Ruvani-san, the culinary wizard, stands to the right, with her partner-in-spice, Sampika-san, to the left.
Ruvani-san, after her scholarly pursuits in Sri Lanka, tied the knot and embarked on a new chapter in Japan, enrolling in the graduate school at Sojo University in Kumamoto City.
Amid her studies, she became known for throwing legendary curry parties, enchanting her academic circle. It was this culinary camaraderie that sparked the inception of her venture into creating a restaurant based on Sri Lankan home cooking, eventually leading to the birth of this establishment in Namikizaka.

3. Patties
These are Sri Lankan-style fried dumplings generously filled with a mix of potatoes and fish, similar in shape to empanadas or Jamaican patties.
5. Cheese Kottu
Kottu is a dish where thinly sliced roti (flatbread) is stir-fried along with various ingredients. You’ll hear the distinctive sound echoing from the kitchen as it’s briskly stir-fried.
9. Lamprais (Lump Rice)
Lamprais is a traditional Sri Lankan dish where a banquet of curry, rich in spices and herbs, is neatly wrapped in a banana leaf. This packed meal features basmati rice cooked with a blend of spices, accompanied by fried eggs, dhal curry, chicken curry, and sautéed eggplant, among other ingredients.
Basmati rice, a premium grain, is considered a delicacy in Sri Lanka. Due to the meticulous process of cooking basmati rice with spices, lamprais is available by reservation only.
It’s… SO GOOD!!!!!
Diving into this lamp rice is like unboxing a treasure chest of flavors – a sensory journey through Sri Lanka’s culinary heritage at Ruvani’s. With each bite, you’re riding a flavorful rollercoaster of sweet, spicy, salty, bitter, astringent, and sour – a harmony that’s simply irresistible.
