Ever wanted to explore the rural countryside of Japan without the hassle of driving? ‘Guru Chari’ offers a perfect solution. Starting from Takamori Station, you can rent an electric-assist bicycle and set out to discover the town at your own pace. For just 2,800 yen, this experience includes not only the bike and helmet but also 10 vouchers to use at various local businesses and a discount ticket for the Takamori Spring Water Tunnel.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the 14 partner venues that add flavor and fun to the ‘Guru Chari‘ tour:

Ouraiken (王来軒)

Indulge in five savory pan-fried gyoza dumplings (2 vouchers). Known for their punchy chive flavor, they’re perfect alongside a bowl of ramen or champon.

Aso Marukichi Soy Sauce (阿蘇マルキチしょうゆ)

Treat yourself to soy sauce monaka ice cream (2 vouchers). Crafted by a traditional soy sauce maker, this creamy milk ice topped with a soy glaze sits between crisp monaka wafers—an unusual yet tasty combination.

Yamamura Brewery (山村酒造) 

Take home a traditional Japanese sake masu (2 vouchers), a wooden cup used to drink sake, adding a unique flavor and experience to your drink.

Aso Cafe SOSUI

Choose from a slice of fresh Aso tomato roll cake or luxurious brandy cake (2 vouchers). Perfect for a sweet pause on your journey.

Takeda Confectionery (武田製菓) 

Savor a Senbonzakura madeleine (1 voucher), a soft cake named after Takamori’s famous cherry trees, offering a nostalgic taste that comforts the soul.

Umano Kura (旨乃蔵)

Try the hearty Akaushi Korokke (1 voucher), a deep fried croquette of mashed potato and horse meat, a specialty at this local cuisine hotspot—and great fuel for cyclists! 

Bluegrass

There’s more to Guruchari than just snacks! Here you can experience horseback riding for 6 vouchers. Mount a horse and take in the scenery in a different stride. Booking in advance is required.

Takamori Dengaku no Sato (高森田楽の里)

Enjoy charcoal-grilled yamame, a local fresh-water fish, for a real taste of Takamori (4 vouchers).

Shikimi Chaya (四季見茶屋) 
Drop by for a delicious serving of agedashi tofu (1 voucher), a fried tofu dish in a dashi broth, located near the Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine—a perfect rest stop.

Tokumaru Tsukemono (徳丸漬物) 

Take home some Stir-Fried Aso Takana (mini size) (1 voucher), located near the shrine, where a variety of pickles tempt you into trying something new with each visit. Takana can be eaten alongside rice, mixed in with rice and then formed into onigiri rice balls, or even stir-fried to make takana fried rice! All options are amazing delicious!

Kuroshiba Coffee (黒柴コーヒー)

If you need a break, stop for a freshly-brewed coffee and a serving of Japanese custard pudding (3 vouchers). A sweet pick-me-up to refresh your cycling energy.

Sweet Shop Fukumame (甘味処ふくまめ)

Delight in a cream anmitsu (6 vouchers), a traditional Japanese dessert topped with plenty of fruits, ice cream and agar jelly. They also serve a satisfying spicy “Napolitan” spaghetti, an old-school Japanese pasta dish popular in both home kitchens and family restaurants across the country.

Fairy Tale Zoo (フェアリーテイル) 

Spend time with adorable animals (4 vouchers). This attraction is perfect for families looking to interact with friendly fauna.

Tanoshika Tei (たのしか亭)
Enjoy a variety of dorayaki available in black bean, white bean, custard, chocolate, and pistachio flavors (1 voucher each).

Starting this spring, ‘Guruchari’ can also be embarked from Kyukamura Minamiaso! We’ve created new routes that take advantage of this location, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Takamori area.
