Join us as we guide you through this enchanting locale, blending exquisite photography with the allure of hidden streets.

Good evening, everyone.

I’m Yasuda, and I have a profound affection for hidden alleyways and backstreets.

In this volume of our journey through Kumamoto’s beloved backstreets, I am excited to introduce you to a very unique place, the “Kawaramachi Textile District.”

Located near downtown Kumamoto, just steps from the Kawaramachi tram stop, this district is not only a popular photo spot but also holds a piece of the city’s historical charm.

In the past, the district buzzed with visitors from inside and outside the prefecture, although nowadays, photography in the district requires prior permission.

Surviving fires and the ravages of time, many clothing stores here have retained their original post-war façades, while others have not been so lucky.

Originally an area where wholesale textile businesses were concentrate, today, the district is also known as a hub for art, with cafes, quirky vintage shops, and galleries breathing new life into every corner.

Stumbling upon art while nibbling street food is just one of the pleasures awaiting visitors.

You can also enjoy murals by prominent artists; though these are occasionally updated, they infuse a timeless alley with a sense of progression.

As the shops begin to close at dusk and the residences above come to life with the sounds of children, a wave of nostalgia washes over, enriching the experience.

I highly encourage you to visit and soak in the ambiance of Kawaramachi Textile District for yourself!
