“Kamitori” and “Shimotori”—What Exactly Are They?! A Primer on Kumamoto’s Two Main Shopping Arcades

A primer on Kamitori and Shimotori, the premier shopping arcades in the center of Kumamoto City.

If you’re visitng Kumamoto, chances are you’ll at some point find yourself wandering along Kamitori and Shimotori, arguably the city’s most bustling thoroughfares, on par with the famed Kumamoto Castle.

Here’s a quick primer on the general geography…

First, let’s get the names right to avoid common confusion… it’s “Kamitori” (not “Kamidori”) and “Shimotori” (not “Shimodori”). No voiced consonants here! (Often Japanese tourists from other parts of the country get this mixed up!)

Starting with Shimotori, this is no ordinary shopping arcade. It boasts a height of 10 meters, a width of 15 meters, and stretches over 511 meters, making it one of the largest in Japan.

The history of Shimotori is as fascinating as its size. The entire arcade was destroyed during World War II bombings and later suffered great damage from a flood in 1953. These events led to its transformation and widening, laying the foundation for the commercial powerhouse it is today.

As you walk from one end of Shimotori to the other, you’ll notice a mix of modern apparel brands, traditional shops, drugstores, and a variety of restaurants. The length of this arcade is truly appreciated when walked in its entirety, ending at a familiar sculpture in front of the former PARCO building – a spherical structure beloved by locals and popular meeting spot.

Cross the road from here, and you’ll find yourself in Kamitori. This particular view of the tram line and castle is often seen on national TV as a backdrop for weather updates. Kamitori, compared to Shimotori, exudes a more serene atmosphere, with its abundant use of wood and a number of longstanding stores.

Despite being impacted by the 2016 Earthquakes, these arcades remain a vibrant mix of culture, history, and contemporary shopping. So, when in Kumamoto, make sure to experience these unique, extended arcades that stand as a testament to the city’s resilience and charm!
