Your Ticket to 1958: “White Horse”—Japan’s Last Surviving Cabaret

Cabaret New Hakuba, a beacon of Yatsushiro's nightlife, stands as the sole surviving cabaret in Japan, offering a glimpse into the country's cabaret culture of yesteryear. This historical venue, opened in 1958, not only symbolizes Japan's past but also marks the starting point of the famed late enka singer Aki Yashiro.

“White Horse” (Cabaret New Hakuba): A Timeless Beacon of Japan’s Nightlife in Yatsushiro

Hello there! This is Sabiron from the Yatsushiro Press editorial team.

The tale of Cabaret New Hakuba is a significant chapter in the narrative of Yatsushiro, embodying the spirit of Japan’s cabaret culture that still lives on today. During Japan’s economic boom, cabarets shone as glamorous social hubs. Today, White Horse, also knwon as “Cabaret New Hakuba” stands as the sole survivor, continuing to enchant its audience.

A Glimpse into the Glorious Past and the Resilient Present

Founded in 1958, the same year Tokyo Tower heralded the dawn of a new era of post-war development in Japan, “Hakuba”, meaning “White Horse” in Japanese, was founded in Yatsushiro, quickly becoming a night-time icon.

Amid changing societal norms, cabarets served as elegant venues where one could enjoy live music and dance over drinks. Yatsushiro once hosted several cabarets, with Hakuba and others being the go-to spots for local businessmen and politicians to mingle, embodying the saying, “History is made at night.”

In 1964, Hakuba moved to its current location, with Mr. Ikeda playing a pivotal role alongside the founder, Katsumi Nishida. Mr. Ikeda, inheriting the cabaret 15 years ago and renaming it “Cabaret New Hakuba,” continues to honor its legacy with the same dedication that defined his bond with Mr. Nishida.

Despite the evolving nightlife scene, White Horse, with its Showa-era architecture and ambiance, adapts to modern tastes while preserving its rich heritage. “This establishment is a testament to my father and grandmother’s dedication. It’s my mission to keep the legacy of Japan’s last cabaret alive,” shares Mr. Ikeda.

Step Inside the Showa Era

As you enter through the grand stone entrance, a vast painting immediately catches your eye.

The anticipation builds as you descend the spiral staircase, each step drawing you closer to the vibrant world of yesteryear.

The unchanged neon-lit dance floor, the plush red velvet box seats, and the grand stage for live performances transport you back in time, offering a karaoke experience backed by a live band.

The centerpiece, a majestic chandelier—acquired by the founder at double its intended sale price—symbolizes the heart and soul of Cabaret New Hakuba.

The dance floor sparkles under the lights, making you forget the present moment as you’re mesmerized by the disco ball…

Cabaret New Hakuba isn’t just a relic of the past; it’s a thriving venue for local gatherings, from casual drinks to grand events. Last December, it hosted a live performance by Shintaro Sakamoto, attracting 200 fans nationwide. Esteemed figures, including writer Haruki Murakami, have featured it in their works.

Yatsushiro’s nightlife isn’t complete without a visit to this legendary spot. Why not step into this dazzling slice of history and see for yourself the allure that has captivated generations?
